Module 10 – Reflection

Posted on March 20th, 2011 in Uncategorized by seclitnum

My whole life has changed as a result of completing the Web2  for Teachers Course.

No longer am I a passive onlooker, usually begging (often at the mercy of my husband and kids) for techy type favours, I have become much more tech savvy and confident. I now have the iPod and iPad churning out podcasts and e-Books liberally – I can tell they, the family, are impressed (even if they don’t say so). My appreciation has deepened in terms of using technology in partnership with effective teaching/learning.

I would definitely recommend this course to others. Having a colleague doing the Web2 course at the same time is also highly recommended. Not only do you get to share the  Web2 challenging experience week in and week out, a little healthy competition doesn’t go astray especially when the Particpant’s Purple Tracking Log comes into play!!!

In one word – “ENABLEME”.

Module 9 – e-Books

Wow – not only have I resynched my iPod, I am now going to use the IPad for e-Books!

Can’t believe this all started way back in 1971 – I was 6 years old and we didn’t have a coloured tv. Project Gutenberg 33000 free books. How amazing that the school library has half a million e-books and documents! Loved the video – quite a few statements resonanted with me. Technology as an ali to education and facilitating the what, where and when options. I really like the idea of building in the relationship between technology and learning.

Actually my father-in-law (retired teacher) would be very intetested in PG,  and LibriVox too. Looks like my trips away might be a tad more intersting whenI download some free audio books via podcasts to my iPod. My holidays are looking pretty fancy too with some e-Books arriving in a few seconds at my fingertips, genre- depending on my mood.

Thought Fried Beef Tech was a great site. Again I am absolutely blown away by the sheer volume of free resources in the guise of e-books and e-documents.

As far as teaching goes, I think e-books are the way to go especially amongst our reluctant readers. Quite a few of our secondary schools have bought devices to encourage our students to “pick up a book”.

Again, this whole area of e-Books would be a great topic to be discussed at the Secondary Literacy and Numeracy forum.

Module 9 – Teacher Tube

Loved “pay attention” and I think I’ll share this with the Secondary Literacy and Numeracy Coordinators at our next meeting.

Death by power point kept saying my access was denied!?@#

Mr Duey’s rap was very happening until half way through and then an error message kept coming through.

I’m thinking that maybe my connection here may be the problem -I got the song but know video. All going to mud.

Abbot and Costello’s audio came through but not the video. There are many things to explore on Teacher Tube though I found it a bit clumsy – maybe I need to go to bed and have another crack at it tomorrow. I did like the categories listed below and I am confident there are many resources, similar to CNA portal perhaps?

Module 9 – You Tube

“…as few calories as half an average grapefruit” and “bracing” to boot! Same era as a cigarette being good for your lungs! I do love the old clips. Ma and Pas adding up is a beauty.

How fantastic are these gems!

I often use use You Tube clips in my presentations. Nothing like a bit of a laugh. They are very easy to insert in a Prezi or powerpoint presentation.

My recent favourites:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbY-Ofg8WaQ   clearing off wrong car  and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbY-Ofg8WaQ   rounding up and hearding cats.

The site hostes a zillion clips and the search tool is really good. I dislike the adds that come the downloads – is there a way around having these adds as part of the videoe?

I’m a fan!

Module 9 – Podcasts

Posted on March 19th, 2011 in Uncategorized by seclitnum

This investigation of this module was helped along by my own Hamish (son). Interupting his viewing of the Big Bang Theory was probably not my best timing! Anyway he gave me enough of the basics so that I could “play around”.

Just had a look in the education podcasts and there are heaps!!! I could get lost in this amazing world. I can see great possibilities.  Had some difficulty actually subscribing. My son wouldn’t help me! So I just played about for quite a while – then got it! I will be, no doubt, revisiting this area esp come the holidays!

I have not ever downloaded  podcasts of my own, now I feel more confident that I would see this as a very enriching additional learning resource. The major advantage of pulling in an RSS feed of Podcast website would be the immediacy of being alerted to another favourite podcast – staying up to date.

Module 8 – Social Bookmarking

What better to do on a Friday night? Sort out my bookmarks.

Signed up for Delicious and got started sorting out the mess I have re: my bookmarks.  Once started, this to became addictive. Checked out a few others to see what tags they used. Decided to keep it simple and tagged a few sites curriculum; CEO; Web2Course. Went back and edited a few of my bookmarks as private eg pay advice, calendar etc.

Fairly simple to use and something that I will find very handy. In fact I am sure I would not have messed up my blog earlier on if I was using this – I have titled the admin “Dashboard” no less!

Again I am in shock that I haven’t been using this web tool way back!

In the classroom this would be great for students as an organisational tool. They could use subject names as tags. This would help with research sites. In fact, it will be great for when I start another course!

Module 7 – Social Networking Facebook

Well I reactivated my account which I had only opened to accept a reunion invitation. I closed it because I kept getting emails from people I hardly new and I was feeling mean not accepting them as my friends. There were even people I didn’t know wanting to be my friend. So my current status is 4 friends and my daughter won’t accept me as her friend – told her it was part of my assignment. Found the privacy setting -easily missed as the default is public viewing. Checked out my son’s facebook and was suprised to see he has 124 friends (many who wished him happy birthday) – my daughter has 740 – how can that be safe??? Obviously you can get around the age restrictions!

I joined a scuba diving group – I wonder about the email traffic in joining a group. Will it be just as annoying as all these random people wanting to befriend me?

How would I use it to gather and share resources and ideas – I think this would work really well under “a friend of a friend of a friend” model. In fact I think by joining interest groups there is great potential in gleaning and sharing ideas.

Given that I am a fairly private nutter, I don’t think I am a great fan of facebook. I remember when my husband signed up I was a tad frantic about others looking at our family photos – he got the message. Unfortunately I didn’t mention this to my kids and unbeknown to me, we had quite a few people following the progress of us building our beach house. When I asked who they had been talking to they said the photos were being posted on Facebook. Arrrgggg!!!

This is a bit of a concern if someone comments that we are out there -leaves our home up for raiding. Just hope the buggers decide to clean it up before lifting stuff.

I had tweak of Twitter – liked the limited character setting. Short and quick. Not sure of my name I put in seclitnum and I keep getting @lmclennan. So I put both names in the participants details. Seemed very slow to work. Put in BoS. Nothing happened. Will explore more later on. I have an account and have tweeted my first tweet on the newer version. Would like to follow Hamish and Andy. Onto that over the weekend.

I am now a follower of HamishandAndy. Tried BoS but it is protected. Added the twitter gadget to iGoogle page. Twitted a couple of comments and retwitted. This might be addictive. I liked the direct message and sent one to Jenny Lawson. Not a lot of depth to this tool, but lots of fun. Will now give it a go on my phone….it works!

Module 6 – iGoogle

Posted on March 16th, 2011 in Uncategorized by seclitnum

Oh My God.

Totally blown away.

It is now as my screen saver.

Accidently added Google Docs as a gadget twice – how do I get rid of the second one.

I’m really looking like I know what’s going on.  My kids are going to be so impressed!

I am going to have so much time on my hands – might need a second job!

Love iGoogle!

Module 6 – Google Reader

Posted on March 16th, 2011 in Uncategorized by seclitnum

Another time saving tool. I have subscribed to Sydney Morning Herald, ACARA, AllthingsPLC, Board of Studies and Australian Curriculum. This gives me loads to look at in my down time (of which is growing now that I have embarked on a few additional google tools). I have a rss coming to my email-am I on the right track here???

I think we can all take advantage of this technology as a time saver. Information coming to us instead of searching. It’s like having your own personal assistant. I was going to subscribe to wotif and Myer’s catalogue but thought I’d keep it professional.

Like anything, my new nueral pathways will need to be activated by making sure I use all of this amazing tech stuff.

Module 6 – Google book search

Posted on March 14th, 2011 in Uncategorized by seclitnum

This tool blew me away. I feel like I am on the catch up with what probable the whole world already knows. I put in Fiji and many books appeared. I also experimented with the variety of view options available.
In an educational setting I agreed with the Hey Jude Blog post. Having a keen interest in engaging boys in reading – iPod and iPads along with other devices may well and truely be the key. I am hopeful that they won’t miss the experience of flicking through and holding onto a book.
My son has a love for reading and I think that might be because his sister and parents have always got a book on the go. Embracing the use of devices to launch the love of books might be the key to unlocking the reluctancy we often see at school with boys. This librarian (Jude) has got some food for thought.
